Obama Wants to End Our Practice of Daylight Savings

by E

Thank God!! There’s no point to it… and well, evidently it’s not all it’s cracked up to be.

I understood DST, the practice of Spring forward, Fall back was instilled as a means to aid farmers with their crops. Apparently that’s bullshit. According to this Op-Ed from the New York Times, DST is meant to cut our energy use, but it actually doesn’t—whatever, point is, Obama as well as others agree that Daylight Savings is a waste of time in conserving energy.

Although many people believe it has an agricultural provenance, daylight time has always been a policy meant to save energy. As Benjamin Franklin argued, if people moved up their summer schedules by an hour, they could live by “sunshine rather than candles” in the evenings.

Energy conservation was the motivation for daylight time during World Wars I and II and the oil embargo of the 1970s, and it remains so today — even though there has been little scientific evidence to suggest daylight time actually helps us cut back on electricity use.

Recently, however, we were able to conduct a study in Indiana, where daylight time was instituted statewide only in 2006. Before that year, daylight time was in effect in just a handful of counties. This change of policy offered a unique, natural experiment to measure the overall effect on residential electricity consumption. We could compare the amount of energy used by households in the late-adopting counties during the two years before they switched to daylight time with the amounts they used during the year afterward — while using counties that always practiced daylight time as a control group.

We found that daylight time caused a 1 percent overall increase in residential electricity use, though the effect varied from month to month. The greatest increase occurred in late summer and early fall, when electricity use rose by 2 percent to 4 percent.

Daylight time costs Indiana households an average of $3.29 a year in higher electricity bills, or about $9 million for the whole state. We also calculated the health and other social costs of increased pollution emissions at $1.7 million to $5.5 million per year.

What explains this unexpected result? While daylight time reduces demand for household lighting, it increases demand for heating in the early spring and late fall (in the mornings) and, even more important, for cooling on summer evenings. Benjamin Franklin was right about candles, in other words, but he did not consider air-conditioners.

I KNEW IT! Obama is undoubtably intelligent life from another planet! I would like to thank all the alien life forms out there for what an extraordinarily intelligent being our next President of these UNITED States is!
I gave up LONG AGO, (the dream of intelligent politicians), and when I read the article in 2005, “President George W. Bush signs into law a broad energy bill that will extend Daylight Savings Time by four weeks.” I was simply put, only served as affirmation for me, the FACT that ALL politicians are at the very least commonly stupid! That is to say, they are completely, without a doubt, totally ignorant of ALL common sense.
Since I was thrust out into the night to go to school one spring morning, I have ALWAYS questioned what the hell this was all about. I remember a story going around that had it’s origins on Capitol Hill, (supposedly), that it was all due to a ‘good ‘ol boy’ Alcohol and Cigar session, that the bet was made that whichever Senator was able to come up with the most ridiculous and assenine bill and actually get it through Congress, and possibly even signed into law, would be declared the victor. This would not only show the power that Senator had but, without their beknowence the power of our country as the whole world eventually followed along. Or maybe they did know, and wanted to exhibit the entire worlds stupidity and weakness. Need I say what bill was successful? I wonder what the spoils were? Perhaps an extra round of golf some evening?
My faith has been restored in the human race. There is still intelligent life here! Thank you! Mr. Obama!
